The following list details recent significant musical and academic activities
of composer Michael Berkowski.
  • September 2006 Isaac Watras and Cincinnati's Contermporary Performer's Workshop commissioned a set of computer music accompaniments to Shinichi Suzuki's Cello School Vol. 1 An accompaniment CD was created of new synthetic and algorithmic works. Mr. Watras, a Suzuki method instructor, has since performed the complete set in Cincinnati, OH and partially at the University of Dayton.

  • 10.June.2005: Gesture Lesson has been selected by Computer Music Journal for presentation on the accompanying DVD of the upcoming Winter 2005 issue (vol.29 no.4).

  • 18.February.2005: Species premiered at the Spark2005 Festival of Electronic Music and Art, Minneapolis.

  • 17.February.2005: Sound Organization and Spatialization with John Conway's Game of Life presented at the Spark2005 Festival of Electronic Music and Art, Minneapolis.

  • December.2004: PLSR (2003), a 60 second piece for recorded media was released on Capstone Records, as part of the Vox Novus 60x60 project. The disc, CPS-8744, is on sale now.

  • 1.November.2004: Gesture Lesson was shown at the International Computer Music Conference in Miami, FL, and released on the annual conference DVD.

  • May.2004: Gesture Lesson has been programmed as part of the "Short List" in the Machinista.org online gallery and performance series. It was shown in a number of venues in the UK and has now been released on the Machinista DVD, available for download now.

  • 19.February.2004: Gesture Lesson, a Regis Ferguson Collective work with video by Gregory Scranton and music by Michael Berkowski premiered at the University of Minnesota's second annual Spark Festival of Electronic Music and Art.

  • 7.November.2003: Digits, a piece for live performance with flex sensitive gloves enjoyed great success in its premiere at the Livewire Concert, presented by the Univ. of Minnesota School of Music and Electronic Music Studios. This performance system is one result of Mr. Berkowski's grant from the Graduate Research Partnership Program at the U of M. Please visit the gallery for a few images of the gloves.

  • 31.October.2003: Mr. Berkowski and Douglas Geers delivered a presentation entitled Computer Composition: Similar Tools, Diverse Musics at the Electronic Music Midwest festival in Kansas City. The discussion focused on the vastly differing styles of music produced by electronic means and more importantly, on how the tools a composer uses influence the music he or she produces.

  • October.2003: happen.later appeared as the soundtrack to a movie by video artist Gregory Scranton at the Backup Festival in Weimar, Germany.

  • May 2003-August 2003: Mr. Berkowski was awarded a Graduate Research Partnership Program grant from the University of Minnesota College of Liberal Arts. The award consists a research salary and an expense budget to be used during the summer 2003 term. The project, in partnership with Douglas Geers, involves the design and construction of several wearble electronic devices for control over parameters of music synthesis and the development of appropriate interface software to use such devices with other commercially available software applications.   • 3.August.2002: Michael married his wonderful wife, Libby, in Detroit, MI.
