VisualSpeak began as a collaborative experiment between Michael Berkowski and visual artist Gregory Scranton. Lasting approximately ten minutes, the piece consists of a semi-improvisatory dialog between live electronic sounds and video mixing. Video material is comprised of found footage mixed in real time by Mr. Scranton, in addition to making use of video feedback and noise. All sound material derives from electricity in a very direct manner: analog sound processing devices are chained in a continuous loop, creating a sometimes-predictable-sometimes-not system of noise and feedback which is tapped and amplified. Furthermore, Mr. Berkowski adds an element reminiscent of instrumental performance by splitting an audio cable out from the signal's feedback loop and using the unconnected end to manipulate the sound. The cable's end interacts magnetically with ampification equipment and introduces a path to electrical ground through the performer's body. By lightly touching or rubbing the plug, one may "perform" with the electricity. Each of these techniques and their permutations create unique anomalies in the resultant sound.
VisualSpeak was performed twice in Spring 2003 by Mr. Berkowski and Mr. Scranton.
