Shiver, completed in Spring 2003, represents the composer's first sizable exploration into the world of granular synthesis. The work's one source sound was extracted from Noise-space (2002) and subjected to several granular transformations and deconstructions, evolving into a kind of dialog with itself over the course of the piece's six minute duration. Dense textures early in the work give way to a single rich tone, evolving timbrally before disintegrating to sparse iterations of sound reminiscent of the work's opening. Shiver premiered in April 2003 at the University of Minnesota.
