Shapestudy and Fanfare, a multichannel composition for fixed media, was composed during the summer of 2005. An entirely synthetic work, the piece explores the timbral transformation of simple sine tones in simple harmonic relationships to increasingly rich spectra, accomplished through the algorithimic organization of sound events in time and pitch. Through the juxtapositions of simple and rich spectra in ever dynamic layers, the listener is pulled through a thorough exploration of a harmonic series built upon the opening 30 Hertz drone. The work's climactic fanfare came about primarily as a consequence of the algorithm used. Shapestudy and Fanfare was designed entirely in Miller Puckette's Puredata programming environment.
